Hunting Spiders and Web Building Spiders

Spider infestations are one of the most commonly complained about pest control problems in the United States. There are actually two separate kinds of spiders that can invade your home. The first of these types are web building spiders. Naturally, web builders are spiders that prefer to build webs to catch food. They usually build their webs in the corner of rooms or in areas that are rarely used like garages and tool sheds. A very common place to see spider webs is also the overhand of roofs on houses and in trees and bushes.

In addition to web building spiders there are also hunting spiders. These are spiders that leave the protection of their home to find and kill their own prey. Examples of hunting spiders are wolf spiders, brown recluse spiders and jumping spiders. These spiders spend most of their time hunting others of their kind, crickets, moths, flies, and cockroaches.

Both types of spiders, web builders and hunters, have venomous species among them. For the web building spiders the most poisonous is the Black Widow. The Black Widow spider tends to build large, seemingly disorganized webs in dark, unused places. Some common places to find black widows are in wood piles and garages.

While all spiders differ it the degree of poison that they have available, there are certain species among both hunters and web builders that are considered as dangers to humans and small pets. Two of these more dangerous species are the Black Widow and the Brown Recluse.

In this country, the most dangerous and feared spider that we have is the Black Widow. Each area of the country has their own special species of widows but they all basically look the same and are easily identifiable. The poison of a widow is almost equal to a coral snake (very, very deadly) but due to the small amount that most spiders are able to inject they are not nearly as deadly as a coral snake.

In spite of the small amount of venom that the Widow is able to inject, if you are bit by one it is very important that you go to the hospital right away to be administered the anti venom. Some records seem to show that prior to the creation of Black Widow anti venom, that almost 5% of all bits resulted in killing the recipient.

Some people feel that spiders in a home are a good way to keep down the number of other insects because the spiders feed on the other insects. This is a fallacy in logic because the spiders are worse bugs to have in your house when compared to crickets and even cockroaches. Spiders are much more likely to bite the occupants of homes and their bits can cause sickness.

Once a person realizes what are the possible results of certain types of spider bites, it becomes a little crazy to believe that having some spiders in your home can be a good thing. Some people teach this because they feel that spiders that eat other bugs keep down the numbers of overall pests in your house. While this is true, the bottom line is that shy of termites or scorpions, there are few pests that are worse to have in your home than spiders.

If you are looking for a method to keep your home pest free then we recommend a regular maintenance schedule with an emphasis on laying down a protective layer of pesticide around the perimeter of your home.

There are organizations that provide professional pest control in all 50 states. Before you choose to do-it-yourself with a more intensive type of extermination procedure, such as scorpion control it is highly recommended that you speak to a professional.
